The Lowdown On Maternity Wardrobe Essentials + FREE Giveaway

It starts off with a bang.

Wow.  You need more stuff.

But do you, really?  By the end of this article, you will gain ideas on how to build your own personal style in pregnancy.

There are a lot of blogs out there who feature this debate.  But I’m here to tell you that either approach is OK – whether you’re cutting corners while discovering clothing hacks for that bump OR splurging your money on the only time in your life you’ll appreciate having a round belly!

Needing = a necessity.  Want = a desire.

Would you like to incorporate both?

When I first found out I was pregnant, I was adamant about checking for a bump pretty much every other day.  And embarrassingly enough, after a good meal, I wanted to pretend I could “see” my little peanut.  Strange?  Hm.  Overly excited?  Yes!  Maybe a little.

I purchased my first maternity band around 12 weeks, after seeing our second sonogram.  I had maybe two, unimpressive little inches of extra padding just above my pubic bone, but those two inches meant the world to me after losing two babies.  They were my constant reminder that everything was okay, that The Lord was watching over both of us and I wanted to celebrate every moment of that with pride.

This is one type of situation where I would encourage any woman to rejoice in her changing body and explore all the different products and clothes there are out there for maternity.  Another would be someone who has struggled with their identity or self esteem, and, upon discovering that she’s pregnant, feels a weight lifted off of her as her life begins to have a new meaning.

The situation doesn’t HAVE to have deep meaning, of course – there’s nothing wrong with just enjoying pregnancy and having fun! What woman has ever needed an excuse to go shopping?

Celebration.  It’s a good thing.

New life is a blessing and a cherished one.  Of course I’m not telling you to run out and max your credit cards – but I also want to discourage downplaying how beautiful and SPECIAL the pregnant body really is.

If you’re budget conscious like me, but still love hauling… I have some tips for you!

Do your research.
The internet and a friend’s word of mouth are your new best buddies.  Take your time.  Are you shooting for retaining your current look?  How about bohemian?  Something edgy maybe, or more feminine?  Also, it really is true that some articles of clothing such as pants… fit more comfortably if they are branded as “maternity”.  There are some simple hacks such as rollover yoga pants (that’s right, fit mamma, you had your first staple all ready!) or one size fits all leggings, but sometimes you’ll need to break down and go to a specialty store.

Go window shopping.
Try things on.  Take selfies in the mirror, compare colors, patterns, etc.  Get a feel for what makes you glow.

You don’t always have to buy your “pre pregnancy” size, as instructed on the tag.
Sometimes clearance racks are a gold mine.  And just like non maternity clothes, sometimes things run smaller or larger depending on the style, fabric type of brand name.  Look for things one size up or down!  I have found some amazing deals on very high quality clothes that were a size larger but fit perfectly.

The following pieces are items I couldn’t live without – AKA a need.  Anything marked with an “M” was purchased in a specialty store.

Jeans (M)
Fitted Shirts (M)

And here are items I simply wanted, because they made me feel trendy and not frumpy.  Again, anything marked with an “M” was purchased in a specialty store.

SweatersDresses (M)
Comfy Boots
Belly Band (M)

As you can see, there’s a good variety of purchases on either side of the spectrum.  I want you to know that you are beautiful, unique, and wonderfully made and deserve to pamper yourself if you so choose.  And saving money in the process isn’t impossible.  I’m not being endorsed to say or recommend any of these opinions or name brands – I only want to serve as your support and encouragement.

Because I appreciate all of my followers, I want to offer you a chance to win a little “Appreciation Pack” I’ve put together!  Postage is paid and complimentary and nothing I’m offering will benefit me financially, even with me being an official affiliate to Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Great blog, as always! Practical advice here for first time mommies.
I just wanted to add not to look at the advertisement pics of pregnant women modeling the clothing at the specialty stores! This is very important because, unless you are one of the few blessed pregnant women who only gain a belly and no added fat elsewhere, the clothes will NOT look the same on you that they do on the models! Know why? They use non-pregnant, size 00 models and either have then wear a belly pillow or later added the “bump” on the computer.
I cannot tell you how upsetting it was to try on clothes expecting it to fit or look a certain way and it look nothing like it did on the model. When you are pregnant and struggling with the weight gainage and body changes, this can be devastating. Don’t get discouraged because the models in the pictures are not real!
I love your suggestion to make it fun and try on lots of things! It can be hard to find flattering items for your changing body, but it can be done!
